Incredibly small, ridiculously quaint and utterly charming. Downtown Pau is easily walkable by foot for its manageable size packed with all the big high street brands and sprinkled with local cafes and brasseries. A walk in the direction of the Boulevard de Pyrenees offers breathtaking vistas of the Pyrenees mountains. I’m definitely a big-city girl but even I found solace in the calm and this slow-paced lifestyle. The downtown area is full of towering palm trees that make the area very reminiscent of Ticino, in the South of Switzerland. Despite the piercing cold, there were a few tourists around but I imagine that this little city is bustling in the summertime as gelato-eating, flip-flop wearing locals and tourists fight over a spot in one of the few outdoor cafes facing the stunning view of the Pyrenees.
