My guilty indulgence from Stohrer

Let me tell you something.  Paris is sin city when it comes to food.  For a gourmand like myself, there is just way too much temptation everywhere.  This may just be the time to confess that I probably eat more pastries and sweet things then I do real food.  This past weekend I wandered through the quintessential Rue Montorgueil and couldn’t resist making a stop in the famous Patisserie Stohrer that has apparently been around since 1730!  It is officially the oldest patisserie in Paris.  In 1725, Louis XVth married Marie Leszczynska, daughter of King Stanislas of Poland.  As they took up residence at the fabulous Versailles Palace, his pastry chef Stohrer followed them to Versailles.

Five years later, in 1730, Nicholas Stohrer opened his very own patisserie at 51 Rue Montorgueil in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris.  From the very same kitchen where the greatest desserts were conceived and created for the Royal Court, you can now enjoy your own delicious pleasures.  After 10 minutes of contemplation in front of the glass display, I settled for a Tarte Fine that was incredible and sinfully buttery.  Needless to say, I had this before lunch and so I guiltily walked off my indulgence before i sat down to enjoy a big salad in the company of my kindle.  It’s all about compromise!

This stretch of street is as Parisienne as it gets with its cobbled streets, pedestrian-only walkways and large variety of traditional vendors from poissoneries to boulangeries to boucheriesc’est vraiment incroyable!  It’s a foodies paradise and a bustling stretch of the city that is always a pleasure to return to.  Of-course the Christmas lights elevate it to an other-worldly appeal that makes you feel like you walked right into the set of a movie…
